QUIRING, Peter - Passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Lanark Heights Retirement Home, Kitchener, in his 94th year. Peter was born on April 23, 1915, in Voiteg, Banat, Austria-Hungary, now Romania and was predeceased by his wife, Magdalena (Wilhelm) on September 2, 2007. They were married on May 22, 1939, in Tschakowa, Banat, Romania, where Peter was a schoolteacher. The couple immigrated to Kitchener, Ontario, in April 1952, where Peter was immediately offered the position of Organist and choir director of the German Congregation of St. Mary's R.C. Church, a position he held for several years, after which he continued to serve his German parish in various capacities. Peter and Magdalena became well known in the community for the private German Language and Music School, which they founded and operated until their retirement in 1983, having taught over 2,500 students over the years.

A highlight of Peter's life came in 1999 when he and Magdalena were presented the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz), an honour bestowed by the German government in recognition of significant contribution made to the advancement of the German language and culture abroad. The honour was especially gratifying and meaningful as it coincided with the couple's 60th wedding anniversary. Peter is lovingly remembered by his nephew, Roland Wilhelm; nieces, Ingrid and Eleanore and sister-in-law, Eva Wilhelm. Visitation will be held at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home and Chapel , 51 Benton at Church St, Kitchener, on Friday, September 5, 2008 (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Vigil prayers to take place today at 4 p.m. Prayers will be offered from the funeral home chapel on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at 9:40 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 56 Duke St. W., Kitchener at 10 a.m. Father Jacek Martin Mikulski, SAC, officiating. Interment to follow at Woodland Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church Building Fund or St. Mary's General Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family by calling the funeral home at 519-742-4481 or visit www.mem.com
