Jacob A. Quiring, youngest member of the Peter and Agatha (Dick) Quiring family
was born in Lamberton, Minnesota on July 9, 1894. He was eight when the family
moved to the Mountain Lake area. On April 2, 1916 he married Elizabeth Schroeder
and they made their home in Mountain Lake, Minnesota.

In the fall of 1916 the Quirings went in a Model T car to Montana to homestead.
They recall that there weren't any road maps and they used a Blue Book they had
ordered from Sears, which told about the road and gave the land marks that they
were to follow. At Bismark, North Dakota there was no bridge and they crossed
the Missouri River on a leaky ferry, which was all very primitive compared to
what it is now.

Mrs. Quiring states that "having crossed the river the horse drawn lumber wagon
that was on the same ferry ahead of us drove on the narrow trail among the tree
stumps and seemed to turn out to let us pass, but turned right back into the
trail which caused us to bend the wishbone in our Model T having hit a tree
stump. The woodsmen who were working nearby came and helped straighten it enough
so we could limp into Mandan, North Dakota where we had to stay an extra day, so
Jake could fix our car."

At Glendive, Montana they had to cut across the country to Wolf Point and cross
the Missouri River, south of Wolf Point on a rickety pontoon bridge with a
narrow railing of2 x 4's nailed to the edge. It took them a week to travel to
Wolf Point, Montana from Mountain Lake, Minnesota, a distance of 800 miles.

Mrs. Quiring recalls that "at one place an oncoming car, which were few and far
between could not pass us because we were in deep ruts. They lifted our car out
of the ruts then passed us and set our car back into the road so we could
continue on our way."

The first years of farming were not easy in Montana and they returned to
Mountain Lake for four years. During these years they built a home in Mountain
Lake on the corner south of the Eventide Home., where they lived. During those
four years, Mr. Quiring did plumbing for A. A. Penner. There were some hardships
for the family, when both Mr. Quiring and son, Melvin had typhoid fever. They
moved back to Montana in the spring of 1924.

"During depression years, when our territory was a literal dust bowl, we moved
to Bellingham, Washington for nine months, hoping to improve ourselves, but were
not satisfied with conditions over there. We moved in the fall of 1937 and
returned to Frazer in April 1938. From then on things seem to have changed and
the Lord blessed us with crops. We also had apartments in Great Falls, Montana
from 1959 to 1963," states Mrs. Quiring.

The Quiring's moved to Oregon in 1963 and at the present time have a home in
Dallas and a mobile home at Reedley, California. They have five children. Their
oldest son, Melvin and family are living in Dallas, Oregon. He spent quite a few
years in Dallas and Salem running a restaurant. At the present Melvin is foreman
of a construction crew. Bill also lives in Dallas and is working at the Lumber
Mill. Their son Carroll is a maintenance man for Trailer Manufacturing Company
and they live in Chino, California. Their only daughter, Betty is a missionary
teacher in Zaire, (formerly Congo) Africa having served there since 1954.
